Lead Times for Delivery of Precast Concrete

The "lead time barometer" below gives an indication of lead times for supply of precast concrete components as at April 2016

Lead times are from receipt of a confirmed order and final complete details for production of working drawings.

Actual lead times will be different for each precast plant, and can change without notice as contracts are awarded.

Small contracts may be able to be able to be supplied more quickly.

Precast flooring components may be able to be supplied with shorter lead times if alternative systems can be accepted. Click to enlarge the image:

INDUSTRY GUIDE for HANDLING, TRANSPORTATION and ERECTION OF PRECAST CONCRETE

This August 2015 industry guide provides information that may assist those involved in the various stages of handling transportation and erection of precast concrete. These are areas that may not be well covered by other design guides and standards. It does not take priority to legislation such as the Building Act, Health & Safety in Employment Act and others. It is expected that this guide will be updated within 12 months to provide for changes expected to occur during that time.

RIGGING FOR HANDLING PRECAST COMPONENTS

The Code of Practice for Handling Transportation and Erection Clause 3.1.4 states

The builder must co-ordinate between the precast manufacturer and the erection subcontractor to determine the requirements for propping, bracing and special lifting procedures.

Responsibilities are delegated to subcontractors, and where the same subcontractor is responsible for the complete process from manufacture through to final placement on site, the coordination may occur without the builder being involved or even aware of his responsibilities.

Where there are different parties responsible for manufacturing and the on site handling, the builder may instruct the precaster to commence manufacturing prior to determining the requirements of the party responsible for on site handling. In these cases the precaster will generally provide inserts that will permit on site lifting by means identified on the precaster's shop drawings.

As always, the precaster will submit shop drawings to the builder to obtain approval or confirmation that what is drawn fully meets the builder's requirements. The builder must not only ensure the architectural and structural requirements are met, but also the construction requirements for handling and placement on site are met. That should also include confirmation that inserts provided for on site handling and placement meet the requirements of those responsible for these functions.

Smith Crane & Construction published drawings of 92 rigging configurations for demoulding, loading, transport and placement. These have been widely used within the industry and Precast NZ has been given permission to use these and make them available through this web site for general use.

It is then up to the parties handling the units to ensure they use appropriate equipment for the configuration provided. The precaster can not be responsible for improper use or overloading of any inserts or fixing devices cast into the precast units.
